We consider a random point and a random line. The point could be on the line, above the line, or below the line, and you can view each of these possibilities below.

Summary

(1) The general equation of a straight line is y=mx+c.

(2) We can pick a x value and substitute this into y=mx+c to find the y value. The coordinate (x,y) will be a point on the line. We can compare with a point with the same x coordinate to determine if its on the line.
